Creating 2025 – Clarity, Alignment and Purpose
“When we have a clear sense of where we’re going, we can be more flexible in how we get there."
– Simon Sinek
Dear Poncho,
Happy 2025!
It is only the beginning of the year, but let’s fast-forward to its end.
Picture this: It’s the end of 2025, New Year’s Eve. You’re surrounded by friends and family, just hours away from midnight. Someone asks:
“So, how was your 2025?”
A smile spreads across your face as you remember what an incredible year you’ve had!
You vividly remember all you achieved, the growth you experienced, and how this year brought you closer to your purpose and what matters most to you.
In this letter, I want to inspire you to design your 2025 so you can turn this vision into a reality.
More than just an email, this is a creative envisioning process that requires quality time. I invite you to save this email and set aside an hour on your calendar to go through this process with full presence, curiosity, and intention.
This is the second part of a two-part process, which starts by reflecting on 2024. If you’ve already done that part, have your reflections ready.
If you haven’t, you can access Part 1: Completing 2024: Celebrations, Challenges, and Learnings here.
It’s fine to move ahead without doing the full look-back, but make sure you spend some time reflecting on 2024 in Step 1.
Our Creating 2025 process includes five steps:
1) Reflect, 2) Align, 3) Envision, 4) Design, and 5) Commit

Step 1: Reflect
Integrate your insights from 2024 as the foundation for the new year.
This step is about using your lessons from last year as ‘stepping stones’, as you begin to envision the new year.
If you’ve already completed the 2024 look-back, revisit your insights to connect your lessons from last year to this process. If not, feel free to reflect on the following questions now.
What worked well last year, and how can you build on this?
Reflect on areas where you made progress. What successes can you build upon? What habits or strengths did you develop that you’d like to carry forward into 2025?
What didn’t work so well, and how can you do things differently in 2025?
Think about moments of misalignment. What patterns or behaviours might have contributed to them? Consider how you can align your actions more closely with your deeper values and intentions in 2025.
Given your experiences in 2024, which area(s) of your life could benefit from more focus and nurturing in 2025?
Think about areas that are important to you but may not have received the attention they need. What would cultivating these aspects look like? How could you nurture them in 2025?
Before you move to the next section, look through your reflections and pick only the two or three most essential areas to focus on in 2025.
Step 2: Align
Examine how well your life aligns with what matters the most to you.
When we visualise the future, it’s easy to focus on external achievements without considering how these objectives connect to what matters the most. To gain clarity on your priorities for the year ahead, reflect on the key areas of your life.
Rate each area on a scale from 1 (not satisfied) to 5 (fully satisfied).
Health
Career
Relationships
Finances
Growth
Purpose
From this reflection, which areas of your life feel most important to focus on in 2025? Often, addressing one or two key areas will have a positive knock-on effect on all others.
Which area(s) stand out for you?
Core Values
Reflect on the core values that matter most to you and how much you are living through those values.
Examples of core values include:
Integrity, Courage, Freedom, Connection, Growth, Contribution, Authenticity, Balance, Purpose, Self-compassion, Gratitude, Self-acceptance.
Select three core values to focus on this year, and write them down.
No need to overthink this, trust your intuition and think of the values which are most important to you, or those you might have been neglecting for some time.
If you need more inspiration, you can view a longer list with more examples of core values here.
Before you move to the next step, reflect on the specific actions you can take in 2025 to ensure your life aligns with those values.
For example, do your relationships reflect values such as authenticity and connection? Does your career align with growth and purpose? Do your finances give you the freedom you need to be in balance?
If the answer to any of these questions is no, reflect on what changes you would need to make to have better alignment.
Step 3: Envision
Visualise 2025 as though it has already happened, and you’re reflecting back on it.
Imagine yourself a year from now, going through this reflection process, but this time, you’re reflecting back on your 2025. The year unfolded in a way that supported your growth and brought you closer to what matters most to you.
Reflect on these questions to guide your visualisation:
What are you most proud of at the end of 2025?
What have you accomplished, and how have you grown?
What has been the most fulfilling part of 2025?
Visualise your 2025 in as much detail as possible:
What moments, achievements, or experiences feel most meaningful?
Who are you with, what are you doing, and how do you feel?
What stands out as most inspiring when you look back on 2025?
Now, close your eyes for a few moments and feel what the year has been like. This emotional connection will help you anchor your vision and make it more tangible.
________________
Now, take five minutes to journal this scenario. Describe experiences, emotions, and milestones that defined your year in as much detail as possible.
Once you have finished journaling, review your words and highlight the key elements. Look for common themes or patterns—what stands out as most essential for next year?
Before moving to the next step, summarise your vision with a single word or a short phrase that reflects the essence of your 2025. This will help you in defining your 'Word of the Year’ later in the process.
Step 4: Design
Turn your vision into actionable steps.
This step helps you identify your main objectives and break them into manageable actions. Simplifying larger goals into smaller steps reduces the sense of overwhelm and helps build momentum.
Identify up to three major objectives for 2025
You are more likely to achieve your goals if you focus on one, two, or a maximum of three main objectives for the year.
For each objective:
Decide on the area of life you want to focus on (e.g., health, career, relationships, finances, growth, purpose.).
Define the objective with a measurable goal (e.g., Save X amount of money, exercise X times a week).
Include a specific date or deadline (e.g., by the end of March, by the time I graduate from my master’s program).
For example:
Complete a half-marathon by 30 March 2025.
Transition to a new role by 15 July 2025.
Be debt-free by the end of November 2025.
Your Objectives for 2025
Make sure your objectives are specific, measurable, and action-oriented.
Start with an active verb, and include a clear way to measure success.
Note: To keep focused define one, two or a maximum of three main objectives. If you only have one or two objectives for the year, skip the steps for the extra objectives.
Objective 1:
Objective 2 (optional):
Objective 3 (optional):
Break down your objectives into steps
For each objective, list small, actionable steps that will help you make consistent progress.
The key is to turn each main objective into bite-sized steps you can focus on in the short term. Begin with actions you can take in the first quarter of the year.
For example:
Objective 1: Find a new job by 15 July 2025
Step 1: Update CV by the end of January
Step 2: Reach out to X people in my network by the end of February
Step 3: Send out 30 applications by the end of March
Your Objectives for 2025 Broken Down into Steps
Add as many steps as you need here, remembering that the more action you take, the clearer your next steps will become.
Objective 1
Step 1
Step 2
Step 3
….
Objective 2 (optional)
Step 1
Step 2
Step 3
….
Objective 3 (optional)
Step 1
Step 2
Step 3
….
Before moving to the last step, review the plan you’ve outlined for each objective. If you notice resistance to any step, break it down further into smaller, more manageable actions.
The key to progress is starting with small, manageable steps, which reduces inner resistance, builds momentum, and helps you stay on track to achieve your 2025 objectives.
Step 5: Commit
Finalise your 2025 plan and put it into action.
Now that you have envisioned your year and defined some clear objectives, it is time to finalise your plan and commit to it by creating supportive structures.
Word of the year
Unless you find a way to keep your plan top of mind, this process will likely become a ‘nice exercise’ that you did at the beginning of the year with little impact on your life.
One simple way to keep this process alive is to think of a word or theme that summarises the ‘energy’ behind your plan.
Consider which word or theme could best represent your year. You can revisit the word you chose at the end of Step 3: Envision or any of the core values that resonate with you.
Reflect on the words you identified during this process or consider any other theme that energises and inspires you.
Reminders, Accountability, and Structure
As you might have realised, intentions alone don’t guarantee action. Lack of focus, overwhelm, low motivation, or competing priorities frequently get in the way.
To help you stay on track, here are my best tips to create supportive structures for success:
Set reminders
Create a monthly reminder to review your plan and update it as needed. Schedule your action steps as tasks or time blocks directly in your calendar to avoid an overwhelming to-do list. I also send quarterly email check-ins to help you revisit your plan and track your progress.
Establish an accountability system
Accountability increases your chances of success. Partner with someone who can help you stay on track, join an online coworking space like Focusmate, or use my quarterly email check-ins as a self-accountability tool.
Anticipate potential challenges
Prepare for setbacks by identifying potential obstacles in advance, especially internal challenges like procrastination or self-doubt. Whether it’s time management, distractions, or low motivation, proactively planning for these challenges will help you stay on course.

Completing 2024: Celebrations, Challenges, and Learnings
It all begins with an idea.
When I was a yoga teacher over a decade ago, I used to offer a New Year's Eve retreat on a floating platform on a lake in a beautiful national park in northern Thailand. Sounds idyllic, right? It was! The picture above is from that place.
Apart from the morning meditation and yoga practices, swimming in the lake, and the great food, the retreat’s main intention was to guide participants through a two-part process:
Looking back through the year coming to an end
Looking ahead to the year about to begin
Since then, this two-part process has become my annual ritual every December.
We start with the look-back through 2024, which includes six steps:
1) Acknowledge, 2) Process, 3) Release, 4) Reaffirm, 5) Integrate and 6) Celebrate.
The importance of looking back
Looking back isn’t just about revisiting old memories; it’s about extracting meaning from your experiences in support of your life.
Looking back allows you to celebrate your achievements, acknowledge your progress and learn from your challenges. Most importantly, it allows you to make better choices moving forward.
Here are the six steps to guide you through this process:
Step 1: Acknowledge
Recognise your achievements, your progress and growth.
“Looking back reminds us of the strength we possess."
A client once told me he had “done nothing” since our last coaching session. After asking him to name three things he HAD done, he ended up listing five, two of which were key successes he had forgotten about.
Unless you consciously acknowledge your progress, your mind may convince you that you haven’t accomplished as much as you have.
Answer these questions to acknowledge your progress and strengths:
What are three achievements you are most proud of from this year?
What strengths or qualities did you develop or deepen this year?
What’s something you’ve done this year that you never thought you could?
Before you move to the next section, notice how you are feeling right now. Describe your inner state in three words:
Step 2: Process
Reflect on the challenges you faced this year and turn them into lessons.
“Life is not about avoiding challenges but learning how to grow from them.”
Challenges in life are inevitable. If, instead of seeing them as obstacles, you learn to view them as opportunities for growth, you can significantly shift your relationship to adversity and increase your sense of agency and resilience.
Processing isn’t about dwelling on the difficulties, but rather extracting the wisdom that supports your growth.
Reflect on the challenges you’ve faced this year to uncover the insights they’ve offered.
What were the three most significant challenges you faced this year?
What lessons did you gain from these challenges, and how have they contributed to your growth?
Looking back, which challenge are you most grateful for and why?
Before you move to the next section, what is different about looking at the challenges you faced from the perspective of the growth they brought?
Step 3: Release
Let go of what no longer serves you to make space for new perspectives.
“Letting go is freeing yourself from the weight that holds you back.”
One of the most effective ways to release what no longer serves you is by experiencing physical sensations in your body.
As you answer the next questions, notice when uncomfortable emotions arise. Close your eyes and tune into the physical sensations in your body.
Instead of getting caught in thinking patterns of judging, blaming, or ruminating, being present with the physical sensations allows you to process and release them.
What experiences or regrets are you holding on to that no longer serve you?
What unproductive habits or beliefs hold you back from moving forward?
Who do you need to forgive or what do you need to let go of?
Before you move to the next section, reflect on what would be possible by releasing these experiences.
Step 4: Reaffirm
Reconnect with your deepest values and what’s most important to you.
"The key to fulfilment is living in line with what you value most."
One of the biggest sources of suffering I see in my clients comes from living out of alignment with their core values.
In this step, I invite you to reconnect with what matters most to you and to reflect on how much you have lived in alignment with your values Consider what changes might be necessary to bring your life into closer alignment with what is most important to you.
Note: No judgment here! Approach these questions with curiosity and kindness.
What is most important to you and how much attention have you given that this year?
When did you feel most aligned, and most disconnected, from your values this year?
Which of your values do you want to focus on deepening in the coming year?
Before you move to the next section, reflect on the values that you haven’t been attending to, and what you can do differently to bring more attention to them.
Step 5: Integrate
Gather your insights from this process and reflect on ways to put them into practice.
"Insights are only valuable when they translate into action."
Integration is about turning your insights into meaningful shifts. In this step, I invite you to reflect on your key takeaways and begin to think about the changes you want to make.
What are your three main takeaways from this whole process?
What areas of your life do you most want to focus on moving forward?
Before you move to the next section, reflect on this question: if you could make ONE change that would have the biggest impact on your life, what would that be?
Step 6: Celebrate
Complete 2024 by celebrating all your experiences this year and reconnecting with gratitude.
“Celebration is the practice of honouring your continuous growth.”
In this final step, I invite you to honour everything you’ve gained this year and close 2024 with gratitude for all it has brought into your life.
What have you gained from 2024 that you want to celebrate?
Which opportunities or people in your life are you most grateful for?
As you complete this process, notice how you are feeling right now. Describe your inner state in three words:
